Living History Scholars Initiative: Information Session

Curious about the Living History Scholars Initiative and what you could do as a scholar? Join Christine Johnson, faculty advisor for the program, for an online information session about the Spring 2027 initiative. This is an opportunity to learn more about the program and explore how you might develop a project of your own.
Christine Johnson, Professor of History and Faculty Advisor for the Living History Scholars Initiative

Join us on Zoom (link at the bottom of this event page) - The Living History Scholars Initiative invites undergraduate students to explore the past through independent projects that connect their interests with historical research and inquiry. Whether you are interested in exploring a particular historical topic, learning how to work with historical sources, or finding creative ways to share history with others, this session is a chance to learn more about the opportunities available through the program.

Students from all majors are welcome! Want to do a Living History project with other students? We welcome applications from groups of up to four students.

You do not need to be a History major to apply. Students from across disciplines are encouraged to attend, learn about the initiative, and find out how their interests might connect with historical study.

Learn more about the program, explore project possibilities, and review application details on the Living History Scholars Initiative webpage.

⏳Application deadline: Friday, November 13, 2026, at 5 p.m. Central.

Learn About Last Year’s Living History Scholars Projects

How can history be explored through documentary filmmaking and podcasting? In 2026, Living History Scholars Jennifer Ong and Calvin Crossland explored these questions through projects examining the commemoration of two historic St. Louis cemeteries (Jennifer Ong) and the experiences of East African veterans during World War II (Calvin Crossland). Read our Q&A with the scholars to learn about their research and advice for students interested in developing their own independent projects.
